Germination processĀ

Hello all,

Finally after 3 weeks some of the camomile seeds I planted have germinated.

Thanks to my dad (check out my previous post) he showed me how to speed up germination and they’re currently thriving after 2 weeks šŸŒ±

When they’re 1-2 inches tall they’re ready to be planted outside.

Speed up germinationĀ

Hello all,

I recently planted roman camomile seeds, sadly they don’t germinate for up to a month. My dad, a brilliant Gardner shared the awesome secret of speeding up germination. All you need is a paper towel, resealable bag and a tea towel.

  1. Place the paper towel inside the resealable bag.
  2. Sprinkle on desired seeds, making sure they’re separated.
  3. Gently spray the paper towel with water, it will absorb the water and feed the seeds for the next few days.
  4. Reseal the bag and turn it upside down, place onto a tea towel and fold.
  5. Place by a window, where it will be warm.
  6. Check on the seeds everyday and within a few days white roots will appear.
  7. When tiny green shoots appear, it’s time to plant them into pots. Use tweasers to refrain from damaging the root.

DIY pot pourriĀ

Hello all, yet another post on how to make your home smell amazing, cheaply and cheerfully.

DIY pot pourri

There are several ways of making pot pourri from scratch, either buy dried flowers on eBay or dry your own, the sky is the limit with what goes in.

Or a quicker way (as seen in the picture) buy a cheap pack of pourri (Tesco Ā£2) and throw in household ingredients, add a few drops of your desired essential oil/s and violĆ .

What I used:

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Bay leaves
  • Star anise
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom seeds

It smells lovely, it fills the room and gives an autumnal feel. Be experimental with different scents – herbs, spices, flowers, essential oils and dried fruits (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit)

Slice fruit, place them on a lined baking tray, bake them slowly in the oven on a low temperature for 2-3 hours.

Look in charity shops for interesting bowls for the pourri, I used a snack bowl which I had been saving for specifically this.

Planting camomile seedsĀ

Planting roman camomile seeds the eco friendly way ā™»ļø

Hello all, as you’re already aware camomile is used for herb infusions, which is extremely beneficial for your mind, body and soul.

There are 2 types, Roman and German. German camomile can grow up to 5-6 inches tall. Roman camomile grows low on the ground, roughly up to 3-4 inches. Medically both varieties are used for inflammation, fevers, nervous and digestive systems. Both varieties are also pain relieving, antibiotic, antibacterial and sedative.

Today I’m going to show you how to plant them by seed the environmentally friendly way! I’ll update the process as they begin to grow, once they’ve bloomed I’ll document how to harvest and brew camomile.

  1. Remove the lid from your egg carton and put it aside, this will become a tray.
  2. Poke 5 holes in each section, like a domino pattern.
  3. Sprinkle in pre moistened compost and gently press the mix so the camomile seeds don’t fall through because they are so so tiny!
  4. Sprinkle the seeds around 10-15 per section.
  5. Use a small stick and gently scratch each section to gently cover the seeds with the mix.
  6. Press down gently on the mix and water with a spray gun.

The seeds will germinate in 10-14 days, keep the seedlings moist with plenty of sunlight by the window. After roughly 6 weeks, once they’ve grown enough to handle they can be planted outside, still in the egg carton as it’s biodegradable. Camomile needs both the sun and the shade and doesn’t need a lot of watering in the summer.
